Tesla’s Powerwall: Home Automation and Green Energy Redefined

AHT Media Green Building Design, Home Automation

Elon Musk and his team of engineers at Tesla may have  designed the product of the century with the launch of a new revolutionary battery for residential and commercial use – the Powerwall. One of the benefits of home automation has always been green technology, and AHT has several projects already planned to incorporate Tesla’s Powerwall for power management.  It’s truly an exciting moment in history, and we are excited to begin our first installation with Tesla’s newest invention.

In case you missed the May 1st keynote with Elon Musk. Below is the video.

Quick Overview

The Tesla Powerwall home battery is designed to do several things. It operates like one giant UPS, guaranteeing power for your whole house. It’s sleek, and has a modern design. Additionally, multiple units can be combined to create more stored energy.  The battery can store power generated from wind and solar. For those that are planning to stay on the main grid, the battery can be charged during the cheaper off-peak night hours.

Storing Solar Power

Home solar installations consist of a solar panel, an electrical inverter, and now a home battery to store surplus solar energy for later use.

  • Solar panel Installed in an array on your roof, solar panels convert sunlight into electricity.
  • Home battery Powerwall stores surplus electricity generated from solar panels during the day or from the utility grid when rates are low.
  • Inverter Converts direct current electricity from solar panels or a home battery into the alternating current used by your home’s lights, appliances and devices.

Contained within Powerwall’s outdoor-rated enclosure is a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, a liquid thermal management system, a battery management system and a smart DC-DC converter for controlling power flow.

High Demand

As of May 7th, analysts at Bloomberg  estimate that reservations already add up to about $800 million of revenue for Tesla.
Here’s how Bloomberg Business crunched the numbers behind the $800 million:

  • The Powerwall home batteries designed to be paired with rooftop solar systems received 38,000 reservations, according to Musk’s comments during Wednesday’s earnings call.
  • Some customers order more than one battery, with an average reservation amounting to somewhere from 1.5 to two batteries. Musk described the total demand as “more like 50,000 or 60,000” batteries in early reservations.”
  • The Powerwall comes in two designs sold at different prices: $3,000 and $3,500 each.
  • Total Powerwall Orders So Far: $178.8 million.
  • Musk said the company has received 2,500 reservations for the commercial-scale batteries and that the typical installation comes with “at least 10 Powerpacks.” So that’s 25,000 units totaling 2.5 million kilowatt hours.
  • Total Powerpack Orders So Far: $625 million.
  • Combine home and commercial, and you get $800m.
