Dolby Atmos: Home Theater Audio Redefined

AHT Media Dolby Atmos, Home Theater, Media Rooms

There is no name more recognizable to home theater enthusiasts than Dolby. From the earliest surround sound decoding systems to today’s 7.2 technology, Dolby has always been at the forefront of audio technology.

In 2012, Dolby made a gigantic leap from the traditional surround sound capabilities to what is known as Dolby Atmos. So what is Dolby Atoms? Dolby Atoms is an audio decoding system that allows for an increased number of speakers and subwoofers. The first installation was in the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, California, for the premiere of Brave in June 2012. In 2013, there were reportedly 300 commercial installations world-wide. And now, Dolby is getting ready to release the next big thing in home cinema technology to the general public via new receivers from brands like Marantz, Integra, Pioneer Elite and Yamaha, as well as other high-end manufacturers.

When perfectly executed, Dolby asserts there are no gaps in the sound field. The new technology will build on the current naming scheme, where 7.1 indicates seven surround speakers paired with a subwoofer. Dolby Atmos will be designated in 7.1.4 fashion, where again seven indicates the number of typical surround channels, one refers to a single subwoofer, and four indicates the presence of four ceiling speakers.

On the low end, 12 speakers will be supported with the ability to expand to 32. Dolby has given every indication that the system will be modular, allowing consumers to build their system over time.
